Had a over night stay in Takinoya as one of three night accommodations out of our Shiki-Shima trian cruise including an excursion to Noboribetsu. Since being visited to Noboribetsu number of times and stayed in other different on-sen ryokans around before, Takinoya is simply the best among others in terms of over all aspects. It's a hundred years old establishment started as a ryoutei and then transformed into on-sen ryokan. We stayed in D category Japanese & western room up to 83 square meters which was a huge one easily to accommodate 5 to 6 people by both beds and tatami. A private semi open-air on-sen bath with renown Noboribetsu's sulphur spring water 100% natural at room terrace to use at anytime you like usually a normal fixture in high end ryokans, and there are two public on-sen bathes also for guests to use one is on the 5th floor of the building we were in 5 minutes to go up there from the third floor we were on which is a salt spring, the other one located on the lower ground at B1 level needed to go to another lift to enter which is a sulphur on-sen. It said that they have four types on-sen water, however, we didn't notice where the other two were. Dinner served for a kaiseki meal 9 courses in total which couldn't say how outstanding it was, but by using fresh seasonal materials and local region produces rightly cooked and beautifully presented in the kaiseki meal procedure, it was still a very yummy and satisfied one no complain at all. The breakfast was also Japanese as a mini kaiseki, the highlight was a self-warmed tofu pot with fresh green leaves vegetables to boil together by youself and the sauce was also being warmed in the same time a nice touch indeed. The quantity of both meals we felt right up to our capacities, no more and no less. The entire place of Takinoya was immaculate and so clean no outside shoes allow to enter, your own shoes would be kept away at entrance and a written No. matched to your shoes in a piece of paper would be given to identify your own shoes when you need, a typical rule of old and high end on-sen ryokan. The whole ryokan is decorated full of traditional Japanese taste with a small Japanese garden in the yard very classy, and a outside with slightly curved corridor leads the way from the road to the ryokan entrance obviously providing to its privacy and distinguishing from others. We were being assigned a waitress to look after us during our stay named Marry a middle age woman spoke basic words of English plus body language to communicate with us after checked in who showed the way to our room and to carry any bags of yours for you as well as when you were ready to check out. A short and quick introduction for the major functions of the room, a dinner and next day breakfast time can be chosen by your own decision and she would serve both meals for you and be responsible to set up the table in your private dining room attached to the living room through a sliding door, and to notify you when the meal was ready at the time you picked up. The private dining room also has a door to the corridor so the table setting and cleaning up waitress would go through that door in and out therefore guests would not be being disturbed while in the main room, how a woderful consideration and a nice design. Maybe it has only 30 rooms to offer and not fully booked, or maybe there is private on-sen bath in almost very room, the two public on-sen bathes I visited both were nearly empty, the one on 5th floor no one came across in my twice visit, only one person I saw in the lower ground on-sen, and the lobby and shop were also pretty quiet in the evening and morning too. What a truly relaxing ryokan experience it was, exactly we liked it than in other places. We were being well received and greeted at check in offered by matcha with yokan and hot towel a classic way of Japanese ryokan, and being waved to goodby by our waitress and the female ryokan host at departure all the way till they disappeared in our sight. If you wanted to have a new and refined on-sen ryokan experience, Takinoya, the one with history, full of Japanese traditions and hospitality, everything extended into details and its great food and on-sen to enjoy which is really the right place to be. Will be back and highly recommended.
